The Impact of the OECD Standard on the Swiss Banking Industry Dissertation

The Impact of the OECD Standard on the Swiss Banking Industry - Dissertation ExampleThe developments were of strong influence in the actual economy and as the course 2008 came to an end the whole economy had gone through the ensuing crisis (Gugler & Siebert, 2007). Despite the fact that, the Banking industry was one of the most regulated industries within the country, the ongoing fiscal crisis could not be curbed. More often than not, the financial crisis uncovered different imperfections in worldwide regulation. Before this crisis, the whole banking system had been assumed to be secured for as long as each unique bank satisfied the requirements in terms of capital reserves (Brissimis & Papanikolaou, 2008). This enabled it to absorb the upcoming negative economical developments. In many cases, one theory explains that it is sufficient in supervising the banks at a micro-level, and this supervision would prevent a crisis within the entire banking system videlicet at the macro leve l. This theory holds in a non-globalized or less globalized world (Brissimis & Papanikolaou, 2008). Consequently, the actual globalised world quest for upstart requirements for the banking sector. The recent developments in the current financial crisis emphasize the need for international regulations within the banking sector. The financial crisis made the affected banks appear to act unfavorable making an adverse impact on the refinancing mechanism with other financial institutions. This meant that, during the crisis, banks were forced to increase their capital requirements so as to prevent their defaults and as well to fulfill the new capital requirements (Gugler & Siebert, 2007). As a consequence, the banks were forced to reduce their lending to other financial institutions. The shortage in interbank lending brought ab out a liquidity crisis within the whole financial sector. In this respect, it was extremely vital to coordinate new international regulations at a national and i nternational level in order to strengthen the national and the international financial system( Gugler & Siebert, 2007). Additionally, the financial crisis made the public debt increase. Many governments were forced to bail out system relevant financial institutions (De Bandt & Davis, 2000). Different governments spend out a considerable amount of money to stimulate their economies. This forced many governments to reduce their governmental spending and at the same time generate new revenues (Molyneux & Thornton, 2004). Having the requirement of raising new funds, many governments including the US and EU, promoted the repatriation of cross border assets. Switzerland is one of the world leading financial centers in terms of offshore and international banking (Tyndale, 2009). As a consequence, the Swiss banking sector was targeted by these economies. Besides the financial interest of the EU and US, it is also vital to consider the legal aspect of value management by Switzerland. It is also crucial that Switzerland was the main target as a tax haven by the EU and US (Iwata, 2004). The Swiss justice has in many instances made a distinction between Tax fraud and Tax evasion. Tax fraud has always been a crime in Switzerland. In contrast, tax evasion is not a crime in Switzerland. Specifically, the latter assist in explaining why the EU and the US put twitch on more transparency of the Swiss tax management (Jimenez, & Saurina, 2007). However, the EU and Switzerland pursued the interest of harmonizing their tax management. The loosening of the banking secrecy made the attractiveness of the Swiss banking

It may be deemed that this is such advancement on the part of science but nonetheless, the values imbibed in the nature of human beings must be taken into consideration. Giza Pyramids - Essay ExampleTheories of aliens having built the pyramids at Giza ar far-fetched and have not been proved to date. These theories are sometimes advanced by well-known archaeologists ilk Abdel Gallad, but their theories often are based on conjectures and guesses that are unable to stand the test of rigorous academic work by other historians (Todd, 1993). They are often inspired by the sensational nature of researches that surround the pyramids and the conspiracy theories that surround them, accompanied by talk of the power of the dead pharaoh, which has been well-documented in hot culture through films and stories. There are however, theories that talk of the creation of the pyramids by human hands. Ratification of constitution as a result of competing economic Essay

Ratification of constitution as a result of competing economic interests - Essay ExampleIt establishes the fundamental principles of a national establishment that helps in joining the state in an effective political union. The constitution of the United States serves as an inspiring example making many other countries to imitate some of its provisions. F unitaryr (2012) offered the economic interpretation of the constitution and according to him, the formation of the constitution was as a result of competing economic interests mainly between the federalists and anti-federalists. This paper analyses the regard over ratification of the U.S. constitution that came down to competing economic interests and the extent at which the context is persuasive or not The ratification of the U.S. constitution came down to competing economic interests that existed between the federalists and anti -federalists.This context can either be persuasive or not basing the argument on various explanation s given as to why it was ratified. The federalists were individuals whose main economic interests were connected to personal individual. They supported a strong centralized government and were in favor of the constitution drafting and ratification and they include groups of people like, bankers, merchants, shippers among others. They favored commerce and argued that a stronger federal government would bring about economic growth of the new country. Moreover, the federalist had a pluralistic vision of the society as opposed to anti-federalists this is because they viewed society as being composed of many different and competing interests and groups. An example of federalist doctrine is The Federalist Papers written by Alexander Hamilton, commode Jay and James Madison. These doctrines consisted of 82 essays and it was authoritative and great commentary on the constitution. They give a persuasive case for the need a central government for delivery of order and securing the indecenc y of a large republic. According to Madison ,there are two types of government, republican and representative and he preferred a republican one whereby the representatives elected by the people make decisions of government as opposed to democratic government whereby all the citizens are involved in decision making.Madson address the issue as to whether or not republican government brought about by constitution is capable of protecting the liberty of the citizens. For him the most problem of democratic government is what he referred to as faction and this problem can best be solved by a republican government by irresponsible its effects rather than tyranny. He argued that representatives would be more disposed to put into consideration the national interest ahead of a particular interest of the factions and argued that the personality of a large republic like U.S. is likely to naturally frustrate the abilities of a single faction so as to advance its own interests. thusly the fede ral papers were in favor of the constitution and Madison saw the large size of United States as a help to the cause of liberty rather than hinderance. The opponents therefore feared that the strength of the proposed national government would pose a threat to individuals freedom. On the other, the anti-federalist was against the ratification of the constitution because they saw it as having many problems (Foner, 2012). The anti-federalists saw no need of overthrowing the government that existed as constitution would bring new and untested form of government. They feared that the constitution would

Our nation if it wants to develop competitiveness in this way has to adopt new policies that will reduce costs and increase revenues. It was clearly shown that the macro level has to secure stable conditions which guarantee the mathematical operation of the market. This is to be done through prioritising the budget and fiscal policy in maintaining a stable monetary valu e and a governable budget dearth in the country. However, it was shown that the developing countries have been unable to hit this measure. The trade policy under this macro level was said to have promoted active integration each by general or selective liberalization of imports. The ability of our markets to avoid exchange rates with an anti-export bias was viewed as the tool that facilitated the creation of macro-level conditions thereby increase industrial exports. Under the micro-level it was founded that the enterprises must manage their technology and organisational structures and innovations. Continuous products and process innovation was said to be as a result of efficient solicitude technology. However, we were taken through a study of the Japan industry which had been done by one of the researchers present had proved the opposite.A new concept was so developed which provided that industrial production shall be streamlined in a three-propositional

Importance of teams Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Importance of teams - Essay ExampleThe following section will concentre on importance of teamwork in other areas like aviation, auto travel and military and the lessons that healthcare industry can learn.Teamwork is extremely important for any sector that is highly reliant on human mental process. In a team two aspects are equally important taskwork and teamwork. While the former means the skills ask by the members to execute their tasks, the latter means the approach needed by the members to complete the tasks. In aviation, both of these are required. The importance of effective task performance by crew members in the cockpit cannot be denied. At the same time, there should be unvoiced teamwork for harmonization and communication between the crew members. Records have shown that 68 percent of air mishaps occur due to poor coordination between aircrew (Salas & Maurino, 2010, p.254). According to Salas et al. (2005) there are five requirements for a teams efficiency. First, str ong leadership since it is through a team leaders guidance the members can perform in a coordinated manner. Second, members need to monitor the activities of severally other to keep track of errors or lapses to ensure perfection in overall performance. Third, backup behavior like members with less work load should touch the burden of those who have excessive work load. Fourth, adaptability which means members should be able to adjust their work in case of unexpected difficulties. Fifth, team orientation indicates that apiece person should have compatible approach to work with other individuals. All the five elements are required in aviation in order to wish any emergency situation in the cockpit. In auto racing, teamwork between pit crew and race is considered as exemplary. The process underlying auto racing itself requires high level of team work, and it is said that no other industry promotes teamwork as

Measure and assessment Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Measure and assessment - Research Paper ExampleIf they are available from secondary sources, the task becomes easier for the researcher. If not, they have to necessarily resort to collection of ancient data. So long as the requirements are confined to decimal information, they can be collected easily. At the same time, if qualitative information is required, the problem gets compounded. In particular, when a researcher is interested in capturing the behavioral pattern of the chosen samples, task would not be as easy as collective quantitative information. Given the fact that the researcher cannot enter into the minds of respondents, at the best what goes on in the minds of respondents can be captured by designing appropriate questions / statements and eliciting their responses. While the event matter has been debated over the years, there is a consensus amongst researchers on the usefulness of quantity scales. These scales are tools which sorts or rates or ranks the respondents vie w points on the pre-determined criteria. They have been use widely in the areas that call for using psychometric exercises. The behavior of respondents thus gets captured by noting the respondents responses on a scale, and these responses when codified become the data for further analysis. at a time the researchers decide what kind of measurement scales are to be used, it is equally important to determine if the tools used reliability and validity. Of course, a researcher could use a subjugate of measurement scales, alone choosing the right scale is a challenge. Only those scales which are reliable and valid alone will have to be chosen for measurement purposes. When a tool used for measurement produces similar results on repeat, that tool could be considered as reliable. In fact, reliability of a tool is nothing but the degree to which what has been measured yields consistent result each time it get used. Moreover, if what get measured remains free of error, the tool used to measu re them is considered as reliable. On the

Rita Dove Roast Possum What is Thomas Doing Essay

Rita Dove Roast Possum What is Thomas Doing - Essay ExampleHe tells stories about a special horse and also about hunting possums. These are kind of folk stories, but the children love the stories because the evoke a distant time when the manhood was a different place. Part of the context of this different time is that African-Americans would not have been treated as proper people. Behind Thomas is an encyclopedia. Encyclopedias are sibyllic to be repositories of knowledge. They are supposed to be just the facts. But we can see that this book has racists facts such that African-American children stop being intelligent when they cranial orbit puberty. It is clear that the stories that the book tells are less true than the stories that Thomas is remembering of his youth. The encyclopedia is an official book which is full of so-called facts. Thomass story is full of bevel and second-hand information, but Dove is implying that nevertheless Thomass stories are much more true than the b ooks, even if there are dozens of them fulling the shelves. These kind of stories, Dove is saying, tell us a lot about ourselves (Righelato, 87). Thomas stories have embellishments but that only makes them more true, the poet suggests. They are full of old-time know how, which beats academic knowledge every day, Dove implies. When Malcolm asks Thomas about the horse, Thomas replies with more details about the possum.

Personal Perception of Organized Crime Paper Essay

Personal Perception of Organized Crime Paper - Essay ExampleMilitias in Somalia which argon fighting the lag government in Somalia. This type of crime is well organised such that it may involve various associations of persons such as police, politicians, business people and criminals which are formed for the purposes of generating meshwork. In addition, view nonionized crime as one of the social vices that thrives well in an enabling environment, violating human rights and hence should be discourage at all costs. To my view, organized crime is common in urban areas but as its structure advances, it encroaches the rural areas, for instance, the mungiki sect in Kenya which is well established and organized both in the rural and urban areas of the country. The definitions presented in the readings mark similar organized crime activities as the ones in my perception with an exception of il jural prostitution. two my perceptions and the definitions given concur with the unique facto r about organized crime i.e. it is organized or controlled in the manner of their operation. Both the definitions and my perception are of the view that, organized crime flourishes through provision/supply of services and goods that command a high demand in the society. Both perceive attainment of power and profits some of the goals of the syndicated crime. The definitions in the readings recognize that organized crime operates as ongoing enterprises which work rationally so as to generate profits by engage illegal activities. These enterprises insure their survival through the application of force or threats, and by corrupting public officials so as to secure a full point of protection against law enforcement. The definitions in the readings acknowledge illegal prostitution as one of the organized crime activities. These definitions acknowledges that the organized crime may entail legal acts and that the organization may take hierarchical order with positions in the chain of comma nd and the positions involving operational specialization being assigned on the grounds of every friendship, kinship or rational assignment based on skills(Sullivan, 2002). The definitions acknowledge attainment of pride and protection as being additional goals of the organized crime. The definitions acknowledge that members of an organized crime association who actively pursue its goals and to maintain the integral of the enterprise assume permanency. To maintain the discipline or to achieve the ends, members express and bore willingness to use or engage in bribery and/or corruption. The definitions also note that membership of the organized crime enterprises is restricted and that nonmembers might be entangled usually on an emergency/contingency basis. jibe to the definition of organized crime by Abadinski (1990), as quoted by Lunde (2004), There are explicit rules, verbal or written, which are enforced by sanctions that include murder (p.6). The definitions also note that the structure of an organized/syndicated crime relies on its particular illegal activity. According to Best and Luckenbill, as quoted by Lyman and Gary (2004), despite syndicated crime being highly organized, a particular syndicate involved in illegal trafficking of drugs will have a different structure as compared to a syndicated crime engaging in illegal prostitut

Women and Numbers by Teri Perl Essay Example for Free

Women and Numbers by Teri Perl EssayFor soldieryy years, society has presented women to be sweet and man to be tough. Many have encouraged sexist depiction of the sexual category. In addition, this has led to typecasts asserting that girls or women be in addition emotional and too soft for maths and science careers. This is a maintain that presents women biographies from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries who had an interest in the mathematics subject and they pursued their interests. Different chapters in this book discuss different mathematical actions. A very simple book for the upper-elementary and middle school grades that brings to life the stories of mathematician women from the 19th and 20th centuries. Each biography is followed by a discovery activity. Example, in one of Mary Booles numerous accomplishments she staggered into the creation of line art the associated discovery activity shows how students sess create their own string art designs. The goal of the editor is commendable to hearten more girls into mathematics and to ignite interest for the field in all students. The write-ups are a fun to read. They each give a very individual and encircling picture of the whole woman as mathematician, teacher, mother, wife, or partner. In each, it exemplifies the path they followed, not meet career wise but also personally. The impediments of gender and racial prejudice that some of the women faced in following a mathematical career are brilliantly portrayed. An example is Lenore Blum who was not accepted to MIT for her undergraduate degree because there were only 20 dormitory beds available for women.Ideas from the book Each womans mathematical contributions are explained in a language that are easily understandable by a high school or college student interested in what a mathematics career may be like. The three things that all these women had that they excelled in is research, teaching, and service. Research They explored different teach ing methods that would be easier to understand and make mathematical closure simpler. With this in mind they attracted the female gender to there classrooms who excelled in the mathematics fields.Teaching Most of the women mentioned in this book climbed to positions such as head of subdivision chair and a good number were involved in developing policies for mathematics departments. Majority of them were supporters for women, blacks, minorities of any kind. Unambiguously, one is left with the certainty that women have done, can do, and will continue to do mathematics. Service Though most of the women were very conquestful they had a common thread running through the stories of these women, which was they doubted themselves. The service they provided as mathematicians was impeccable notwithstanding having to deal with family issues, social stigma, and several other factors that were against them as mathematician women. Themes used Since mathematics is a hard subject to grasp, teach ing using a thematic method is a great way to cover a range of topics associated to a particular theme. In this book Women and numbers Lives of Women Mathematicians plus husking Activities by Teri Perl, mentions several themes used by the different women mathematicians. Abstract Algebra An example is Emmy who is well known for being an abstract algebraist. Her focus was on differential and algebraic invariants the theory of mathematical rings and non-commutative algebra, linear transformations, and commutative number fields. The main goal of this area is to demonstrate that an invariant (terms that remain unvarying under a group of alteration) can be written as the sum of squares of other numbers. It also wants to show that any two invariants remain invariant. Model theory and differential fields In this theme of model theory and differential fields (logic and algebra), is a theory of calculation and convolution over the real numbers, has focuses on amalgamation of seemingly disti nct areas.Sine Sonya Kovalevsky developed this theme one night as she was studying under the covers of her blanket, because the father did not approve her interest in algebra and geometry. To make logic of some of the derivations, she alternated a chord for the mysterious sine, and everything made sense for small angles. Controversies in math Arguments over the technique mathematics is taught and presented in textbooks will continue as long as schools and teachers have the aptitude to choose their own curricula and teaching attitude. Although there are many variables that influence the success of a student, the main influence is the teacher.Depending on how well the teacher formulates the method to use on teaching mathematics will depend on how spendthrift the students will grasp the information. In this book, the only controversy that is on the spotlight is the issue of gender and mathematics. Since the beginning of times, the female gender has been considered to be weaker than th e male loveseat and it is not different in the mathematics world. Therefore, every theory that the female gender formulated had to be questioned twice and was criticized before it became published. ConclusionThe result is a valuable book for and about women in mathematics at a level appropriate for high school and early college students that celebrates the variety present in the community of women mathematicians. My opinion might be biased being that am a woman, but the book presented challenges that women go through when they are treated as minority when it comes to doing certain things. This book was an encouragement to the girls in their time when gender really mattered in the society and girls were considered inferior to the male gender. The high school girls who believed that math was not for the female gender could now relate to the five women and relate to them. In addition, this has been discussed in the book, how the number of girls doing mathematics increased and they all d id well despite what society expected of them. The 9 women were a role model to the high school students especially the female gender. References Perl, T,. (1993). Women and Numbers Lives of Women Mathematicians plus Discovery Activities. The red room and the signalman Essay Example for Free

The red path and the signalman EssayHow do the authors maintain suspense and tensity in The Red Room and The Signalman which tier do you consider does this most effectively? In The Red Room by H.G surface, written in 1885 and The Signalman by Charles Dickens, written in 1894 are both excellent examples of stories concerning the supernatural. Ghost stories and thrillers were genuinely popular in the Victorian Era. These types of stories are found under the genre Gothic. H.G. Wells and Charles Dickens are both renowned authors and are very good at using particular techniques throughout their writing to maintain suspense and tautness. The Signalman is pock in an age where the train was a brand new technology which was not completely perfected this made it a perfect score to invest a mysterious ghost story. Charles Dickens was influenced to write The Signalman in 1865 when he was in a railway accident in which the train derailed at senior laid-back speed. Ten people were ki lled and many injured. By using his experience to write this story it gave the setting a very contemporary edge, which played on societies disquietude for the latest technology. The Signalman was a man who worked by sign eithering to drivers to slow down. He lived in a cutting, which was a very dark deep place like a coffin with no quick escape if anything happened. A large red light flicked on and a bell rang whenever a train was approaching. A stack of colours used are associated with mystery and death such as red lightblack tunnelsaturnine face. Charles Dickens also uses personification quite regularly. Angry sunsetthe wind and the wires took up the story with a long lamenting wail. Some quotes such as angry sunset suggest that nature itself is angry. The personification can also ferment the proofreader feel that perchance there is something or someone else parade in the darkness. All of the colours are quite dark. Red can slowly be related with death through blood. His use of light is very obvious too, for example gloomier entrancedark way of lifeforeshortened, shadowed. The shadows and midst scares the reader by making them think that perhaps there is something lurking in the shadows. The description used in the story make it very gothic as well, for example earthly deadly smell high stone walls damp air. The gothic genre is well known for danger, so when the reader realises that the story is gothic they can tell that something mysterious or stern is going to happen. The speed of the narrative changes during the course of the story therefore building tension and suspense. I was sitting here, when I heardthe sleeve away when it was gone, the speed of the story going up can build tension because the reader immediately believes that the story is leading up to something. When the narrative is fast it makes the reader think double-quick coming up with lots of questions such as what going to happen. The personality of the characters can build tension for instance His attitude was one of such antepast and watchfulness that I stopped. When you first meet the signalman his nervousness leaves the reader wondering what the reason for this behaviour is. Occasionally throughout the story Charles Dickens repeats current phrases such as Dont telephone call back Halloa, below there. The repetition of these phrases can make the reader think about the reasons, such as why he cannot call back. The Red Room is set lot earlier than it was written giving it a very condemnationless quality. Everything in the setting is very old forge and follows a very standard structure with a foreboding castle, hidden rooms and ghosts. He was purposely gave no indication as to its particular time or location.Just like Charles Dickens he uses the light to give the setting a more sinister atmosphere, dark against the firelight the candles went out. The darkness and shadows darken the room so that the reader cannot visualise the parts of the room making the read er think and imagine what could be lurking in the shadows. The author has very detailed descriptions of certain objects and people, Her pale eyes openedmore bent, wrinkled aged These very detailed descriptions describe some features for example characters very closely so that the scene is very contrasted from very detailed to the invisible. This suggests that perhaps there are thing in the castle that cannot be seen or describes because they are from the supernatural.H.G. Wells repeats certain phrases during the story, Its your own choosingThis night of all nights. Its your own choosing suggests that the man doesnt want to be in anyway responsible for anything that might happen to him in The Red Room. This night of all nights implies that this night is a particularly dangerous night for the narrator to be going to The Red Room. The narrator is very arrogant, and considers that his opinion that the room is not haunted to be unquestionable, octette and twenty years I have lived and nev er a ghost have I seen yet. This builds tension because the reader can tell that something out of place is going to happen. The characters are described in a very spooky way for instance, the man with the withered arm when his coughing had ceased for a whilewrinkled, aged. This builds up tension by using gothic description. The speed of the narrative is very varied. As I entered the door closed behind me at once turned the expose I found in the lock. Short, fast sentences build up tension because each sentence builds up and up to a summit leaving the reader with a sense of danger.H.G. Wells uses personification regularly. My candle flared and made the shadows cower and quiver the shadows as stepped toward me. This makes the seen more dramatic and a lot for the reader to slenderize on and also gives the impression that there is somebody else present. Many of the techniques used in The Red Room are very similar to the techniques used in The Signalman. However The Red Room can build up more tension than The Signalman because it contains more gothic features. The danger involved in the red room its much more obvious than the danger involved in The Signalman, perhaps because of its timeless quality. Because of the timeless quality we know exactly what kind of dangers await him as soon as the scene is set. The narrator is referred to in the first person in one story which gives the reader a stronger sense of being present in the story and makes it seem more realistic. I think that the most effective means of building tension in a story would be the use of light and description creating contrast between the known and the unknown.
